Is the Reformation to blame for modern anxieties?
May 23 @ 1:30 pm - 2:30 pmFree
Dozens of books are published each year promising to make you more productive, politicians praise “hard-working families” and the only acceptable response to “how are you?” is “busy”.
Catherine Evans will explore how the modern obsession with constant productivity started in the 16th century, and how it’s been making us anxious for the last 400 years. Drawing on passages from the works of William Shakespeare, John Donne and George Herbert, this talk will examine how these authors grappled with problems that feel very modern.
