The Origins of Addiction: New Words in the English Reformation

June 13 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Free
What did the Reformation ever do for addiction?

Religious reformers sought to bring the word of God from Latin into English, but found the English language wanting. In order to accurately translate the Bible, and to debate the subtleties of religious doctrine, a new vocabulary was needed. As a result protestant reformers and Bible translators flooded the English vocabulary with new words, and the English language was transformed.

This talk by Jose Murgatroyd Cree explores the new vocabulary of the English reformation, focusing particularly on addiction.
